Biometric machines
The terminal decides what your attendance is worth. A punch tied to a finger or a face at your gate can be defended in a salary dispute; a photo uploaded from a phone cannot. These are the four kinds of reader worth knowing about, and where each one earns its place.
The workhorse. Cheapest per gate, familiar to every worker, and accurate enough for a shop floor once enrolment is done properly.
Nothing to touch and nothing to press. Faster at shift change, and the answer where fingers are damaged, gloved or dirty.
RFID cards or a keypad code. Weaker as evidence — a card can be handed over — but useful as a second factor or a visitor lane.
Palm vein or palm print, usually combined with face or card in one unit. The option when fingerprints genuinely will not read.
The same five numbers decide whether a terminal will cope with your gate. Ask for them before you ask for a price.
Turnstiles
A reader on the wall records who punched. A turnstile decides who gets through. Put them together and tailgating stops being a habit — the count on your gate and the count in your attendance report finally agree.
Three rotating arms at waist height. The default for factory and site gates: rugged, cheap to run, and obvious to use without instruction.
Retracting acrylic or steel flaps in a slim pedestal. Faster and better looking than a tripod — the usual choice for an office or showroom lobby.
A floor-to-ceiling rotating cage. Nobody climbs over it and nobody crawls under it, which is the whole point at an unmanned perimeter.
A single wide swinging leaf. Rarely the main lane — almost always the accessible lane beside the tripods or flaps.
The mistake is buying one lane because the average day is quiet. Size it for shift change, which is the only moment that matters.
Boom barriers
People walk through turnstiles; trucks and cars need a barrier. A boom barrier keeps the vehicle gate orderly, stops the unannounced entry, and takes the argument out of who was let in at two in the morning.
The standard arm, sized to the lane. Round or octagonal aluminium, with reflective tape so a driver sees it at night.
A folding arm for gates with a low roof or a canopy; a fence boom where the arm has to close a gap people would otherwise step through.
The barrier is only as smart as what opens it. Pick the trigger that matches the traffic.
Not optional. A barrier that comes down on a vehicle — or a person — is the one incident that ends the project.
Worth saying plainly: a boom barrier controls vehicles, not attendance. It is usually driven by a vehicle tag or a number plate rather than an employee's finger, so barrier events are a security record — not a punch on a payslip. Where a driver punches at a reader beside the lane, that punch does reach AttnLog like any other.

How to choose
Every site we have installed at came down to four questions. Answer them and the shortlist writes itself — usually to something cheaper than the first quote you were given.
Whatever you install, the punches reach AttnLog over ADMS and are graded against shifts like any other punch — so the gate you build this year still feeds the payroll you run next year.
